Description
Vintage Guatemalan Huipil, Hand-Woven & Hand Embroidered with Large Quetzal Birds. Huipil is the Spanish term for a Mayan woman's traditional blouse. Each style of embroidery identifies where she lives, her religious beliefs, her social and marital status, and her wealth and personality. This brilliant red huipil was woven on a backstrap loom in 2 sections, and then they were embroidered together with a center seam. The finishing touch is the elaborate embroidery that covers the top area and measures 18.5" in length X 33" in width when laying flat. The embroidery shows signs of wear in that there are some loose threads. I still believe it is in very good condition. The neckline is beautifully embroidered with pink and red flowers. There is a little beadwork in the center of each flower on the front and on the back. The plain fabric at the bottom area is in good condition. The side seams are partially sewn together. If you would like to wear it, it would need some work on the hem and the side seams. I believe it could be done easily even for a beginning seamstress. It has some bright yellow and turquoise embroidery, which would look great with jeans. I bought this in Antigua, Guatemala, several years ago, and I am not sure of its age.The neckline has been enlarged, measures 23" in circumference, and has a little tie for fastening it.
The armholes are small and measure 9" in circumference.
When laying flat the huipil measures 33" wide X 28" long.
The weight is 2 lbs.
