Sommer Island Shilling (Bermuda) Novelty Gift Coin

SOMMER ISLAND SHILLING (BERMUDA)
This coinage, the first struck for the English-American Colonies, was issued about "1616.  The coins were known as "Hogge Money" or Hoggies."
These coins were made of brass, lightly slivered and in four denominations shilling, sixpence, threepence, and twopence represented by Roman numerals  The hog is the main device and appears on the obverse side of each.  The reverse shows a full rigged gallion with the flag of St. George on each of four masts.
The islands were named during this early period for Sir George Somers who was shipwrecked there in 1609 while enroute to the Virginia Plantation  Shakespeare's "The Tempest" was supposedly based on this incident.
The Bermuda Islands were named after Juan Bermudy who stopped there in 1515 and left a few hogs behind.  When Somers arrived the island was overrun with hogs and they served as a welcome source of food.
