This wonderful
Black and Cream Poncho was handwoven
in the community of
Santo Tomas Jalieza in Oaxaca Mexico. These weavers are known mostly for their belt making, but they also make Bags, table runners, pillows, Dog Collars and also Ponchos.
I have loved the Weaving from Santo Tomas from the 1st time I visited.
The women from this community have been doing this type of weaving on a
back strap looms for centuries (see photo)
.
Their belts have been transported and traded with the Mayan Women of Guatemala from historic times.
When you purchase pieces that are made
in Mexico you are helping to support these women save their cultural traditions and history..
It's a great example of
contemporary fashion trends
like; Frida Kahlo, Bohemian, Hippie, South Western, Boho, Peasant, Santa Fe, Fiesta, Cowgirl style
